Event Details

Death Hollow is a magical canyon that empties into the Escalante River, just outside Escalante, UT. Located near the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Death Hollow gives us a glimpse into some of the most stunning desert landscapes in Utah. Our 3-day adventure includes just over 20 miles of absolutely stunning scenery. Experience the silence of massive white and red rock walls towering above, alcoves complete with petroglyphs, and the crystal clear, cool water of the Escalante River. The campsite at the confluence of the river is a true desert oasis, complete with large shade trees for hammocking, tucked right beside the river for an amazing, cathartic canyon experience! Don’t miss this! What is included: Thorough pre-trip planning and preparation, complete packing list and instruction, FREE backpacking fitness program, 3 days of guided backpacking, FREE Ignite water bottle, permits, and fees. What is not included: Travel to/from Escalante, pre-trip lodging, food, and gear. *A pre-trip Zoom meeting is mandatory. *All gear and backpacking meals are the responsibility of the participant. Ignite guides will stay at the Circle D Motel in Escalante, UT. However, there are many great lodging options in Escalante! Our adventure begins with a meet and greet dinner on Wednesday, May 15th, 6:00 pm, at Escalante Outfitters (310 West Main Street, Escalante). Thursday morning, we will set off on our backpacking adventure, an 8-mile hike on relatively flat, sandy terrain, in and out of the water. Day two is a breathtaking trip up and down the beautiful slot canyon of Death Hollow. On day three, we will hike back to our cars, returning by approximately 1 pm on Saturday, May 18th. **This adventure requires a moderate level of fitness. You must be able to hike 8 relatively flat miles in one day with a heavy pack at an average speed of 2 mph. ***Safety is always our number one concern. As our trip approaches, we will be monitoring the weather predictions closely. Any significant rain in Escalante or the surrounding areas before or during our scheduled trip will prevent us from entering the canyon and require cancellation. In the event of a cancellation, we will issue a refund. The joys of the backcountry!! Because of the size of this group and the need for permits, we will not be able to issue refunds for this trip if you need to cancel within 14 days of this trip.
